Nature Photography Techniques: Translucency - UP Nature Notes, No. 29

In the previous three Notes, I demonstrated how backlighting can be used creatively to make photographs with sunbursts, silhouettes, and rim lighting (not all at once, of course). Here are a few examples of one more backlighting technique that depends on translucent subjects. In this case, light coming from behind the subject penetrates it to varying degrees. Consequently, the subject actually emits light as well as reflecting it, and internal structures can sometimes be revealed. When multiple translucent objects overlap, as with feathers and leaves, emergent patterns may result.
