Nature Photography Techniques: Rim Lighting - UP Nature Notes, No. 28

In the previous two Notes, I demonstrated how backlighting can be used creatively to make photographs with sunbursts and silhouettes. Here I show examples of yet another backlighting technique called rim lighting. In this case, light coming from behind the subject creates a bright outline around the subject, especially if the subject is fuzzy. In these examples, there was enough ambient light to reveal the front of the subjects, but rim lighting may also occur with silhouettes.
