King Bolete in Two Lights - UP Nature Notes, No. 11

These two photographs of a mushroom were taken on the same day but under different light conditions. One uses chiarscuro, dramatic light and dark to create the illusion of a three-dimensional volume. The other photo uses sfumato, (from Italian sfumare, “to tone down” or “to evaporate like smoke”) with fine shading that produces soft, imperceptible transitions between colors and tones. The mushroom is a ‘King Bolete’ (Boletus atkinsonii), often misidentified as Boletus edulis, which is a European species.
