Hummingbird Migration Begins - UP Nature Notes, No. 22

At the end of summer and beginning of fall, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds start migrating south toward their wintering grounds. Adult males are the first to leave. Adult females are the next, followed shortly by juveniles. By Labor Day in the Upper Peninsula, most of the adult males appear to have headed south. These photos were shot handheld at 1/2,000 of a second in natural light. I usually minimize graininess in my photos, but I emphasized the grain in a couple of these for a different feeling. Notice the white post-ocular spot behind the eyes, which is present in both sexes for most species of hummingbirds.
